Virginia Story - My Journey As a Child Advocate

March 14, 2025

Story: Jacqueline M., Volunteer Leader, VA

Virginia (March 14th 2025)

My journey as a child advocate began with parenthood. As my children’s first teacher, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact I had on their lives, and it sparked a deep desire within me to extend that impact to other children beyond my own family. Motivated by this calling, I pursued multiple degrees in human development, including a graduate certificate in nutrition and a master’s degree in human services counseling, focusing on parenting and child/adolescent development.

Over the past 22 years, I’ve worn many hats in the early childhood education field—preschool teacher, administrator, multi-site childcare center director, and CDA PD Specialist. These roles culminated in one of my most fulfilling positions yet: Volunteer Virginia State Lead for Save the Children Action Network (SCAN). My experiences in this field ultimately brought me to SCAN, where our missions aligned perfectly: advocating for access to high-quality, affordable childcare and nutrition for all children.

My passion for advocacy and SCAN’s mission is also deeply rooted in a shared understanding that 90% of a child’s brain development occurs by the age of five, shaped by critical early experiences. This formative period establishes the foundation for language, social, and cognitive skills, underscoring the urgent need to act during these pivotal years.

Of the numerous opportunities that SCAN provides to get involved and advocate for children, one of my favorite events is Legislative Lobby Day. It exemplifies the heart of advocacy—harnessing our voices and skills to champion issues that profoundly affect young children and their families. The event unites parents, childcare providers, and advocates in delivering a powerful, unified message to lawmakers: childcare is essential. Backed by SCAN’s professional development training, we take meaningful action, driving change through our collective efforts. But Lobby Day is more than just a call to action; it’s a celebration of collaboration. It brings together advocates who share a passion for emphasizing the significance of early childhood education and nutrition. Knowing that our efforts help shape brighter futures for children makes every step of this journey worthwhile—for there is no greater investment than in the well-being of our children

Your voice can change children’s futures

SCAN wouldn’t exist without advocates. In 2024, you helped us send 1 million+ messages to lawmakers, organize events across the nation and host over 600 lobby meetings. Together, we celebrated big wins for kids — like electing champions for children and securing millions of dollars in early learning and child nutrition investments.
