Rural Hunger Is Rising – and This Bill Fuels the Fire

September 2, 2025

Nearly 20% of kids across the U.S. face food insecurity – and in some rural counties, it’s as high as 50%.

Signed into law in July, the “One Big Beautiful Bill” (H.R.1) includes sweeping changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP):

  1. BENEFIT CUTS: SNAP benefits are projected to shrink over time, decreasing by up to $100 per month for 600,000 low-income households.
  1. STRICTER WORK REQUIREMENTS: More than 5 million people risk losing some benefits – including 800,000 children.
  1. STATE PENALTIES: Starting in 2028, states will pay more to administer SNAP, forcing cuts or eliminations.

Now, America’s hunger crisis is about to get even worse – especially in rural communities, where groceries are harder to access and poverty is more persistent.

In total, 22.3 million families are expected to lose some or all of their benefits.

SNAP reduces hunger by up to 30%, lifts millions out of poverty, helps children eat healthier and boosts local economies.

It’s not just a line item – it’s a lifeline.

Congress should do more to support our rural families.

Fight for a Budget that Puts Kids First

The White House’s 2026 budget request is packed with deep cuts to lifesaving humanitarian aid, global health funding, school meals, and early childhood education. This is NOT the future children deserve. Tell Congress: Investing in kids is investing in America.
