Head Start didn’t just support my son, it empowered me as a parent

South Carolina (April 17, 2025)

When my son was four, he was full of energy—curious, bold, and always on the move. As a parent, I loved his spirit, but I often found myself overwhelmed, especially when it came to group settings. His behavior could be challenging, and I didn’t always know how to help him navigate those situations. Then we found Head Start—and everything began to change.

Enrolling my son in a South Carolina Head Start program was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. From the very beginning, the teachers welcomed us with open arms. Their patience, encouragement, and understanding made a world of difference. They saw the bright, curious child behind the behavior and worked with him every day—through hands-on activities, playful learning, and songs that made education feel like an adventure. Slowly but surely, I watched my son blossom. He learned how to express himself, how to connect with others, and how to thrive in a group.

But the transformation wasn’t just his—it was mine, too. Through Head Start, I learned that I am my child’s first and most important teacher. I began using everyday items around the house to support his learning and found joy in those simple, meaningful moments. I also gained a new understanding of the importance of nutrition, health, and being actively involved in my son’s development.

That’s what led me to volunteer at his center. I wanted to give back, to be part of the village that had helped my child grow. I still remember the day the program director recognized me for my service—I felt so proud, so connected.

Head Start didn’t just support my son; it empowered me as a parent. It gave our family a foundation of learning, love, and community that we will carry with us forever.

Head Start funding is under threat, putting families across the nation at risk.

Head Start helps children thrive as learners AND in life – boosting their chances of graduating high school, attending college, securing steady jobs and breaking the cycle of poverty. But if we don’t act now, federal funding could go to ZERO. Programs across the country won’t be able to pay their staff or keep their doors open.
