Building the Blueprint for Universal Child Care

New Mexico is the only state in the nation to offer no-cost, universal child care.

It’s a source of pride for Victoria Acosta, an early childhood educator dedicated to helping kids thrive.

But she knows this powerful progress is only the start.

“Now that there’s that backing for children, it’s time to back educators with dignified wages,” Victoria says. “We have to set the precedent.”

Each day at her child care center is an adventure, filled with creative lesson plans and endless questions from curious 3- and 4-year-olds.

“I want to make an impact so they have the skills to be amazing people,” she shares.

That also means helping kids cope with grief, referring them to therapy and connecting families to community resources – a rewarding and emotionally taxing task.

“We’re here every day caring for children,” says Victoria. “When it’s time to focus on our own needs, there’s no energy left.”

Despite their expertise and commitment, many educators can’t afford to work in the field they love.

“We’re a child’s firstteacher aside from their family, and it’s important we get that same level of respect,” Victoria continues.

She’s fighting for a stronger child care system – one that invests in kids and educators alike.
