WASHINGTON, May 19, 2025
In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Head Start, Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) has launched a digital ad campaign in Washington, D.C., to highlight the importance of continued Congressional support for this vital program. For six decades, Head Start has empowered children and families through high-quality early education, nutritious meals, essential health care, and critical family supports—laying the foundation for lifelong success.
“As Head Start marks its 60th anniversary, SCAN launched digital ads in Washington, D.C., to remind members of Congress that investing in Head Start is investing in America,” said Christy Gleason, Executive Director of Save the Children Action Network. “This milestone is not just a celebration—it’s a call to action. We wanted to honor Head Start’s legacy by urging Congress to continue supporting and strengthening this critical program for generations to come. That’s why we released a powerful new ad featuring Jennifer Garner, a longtime advocate for children, to show what’s at stake for kids and families.”
Despite its proven success, Head Start is only reaching a fraction of the children who need it. Currently, only 1 in 4 eligible children can access Head Start, and just 10% of eligible infants and toddlers are served by Early Head Start. In many rural and under-resourced communities, Head Start is the only reliable option for child care and early learning.
The return on investment is clear: every $1 invested in Head Start yields up to $9 in long-term benefits, including higher graduation rates, improved health outcomes, and increased lifetime earnings. Yet rising costs and persistent staffing shortages threaten access for thousands of families.
“Head Start empowers families, supports our workforce, and strengthens communities,” Gleason added. “If we want to build a stronger, more equitable future, we must invest in the building blocks of opportunity—and that starts with Head Start.”
SCAN is calling on Congress to increase funding for Head Start and Early Head Start, invest in early educators, and expand access so every child has the chance to thrive.
Invest in Head Start. Invest in kids. Invest in America.
