Save the Children Action Network Endorses Phil Weiser for Colorado Governor, Supports Amendment 87 to Invest in Kids and Families

DENVER, Colo. (September 16, 2026) — Save the Children Action Network (SCAN), the political voice for kids, today announced its endorsement of Phil Weiser for Governor of Colorado, citing his strong record of standing up for children and families and his commitment to making childcare more affordable and accessible, strengthening early childhood education and protecting programs that help families put food on the table. 

Colorado’s next governor will play a critical role in determining the future of childcare, Pre-K and child nutrition across the state, and Weiser’s record and priorities make him the candidate best positioned to champion policies that give every child a strong start in life. 

“Phil Weiser has shown that he understands what Colorado families need: affordable childcare, strong early learning opportunities and reliable access to nutritious food,” said SCAN Colorado State Manager Ana Bustamante. “As Attorney General, he stood up when critical programs like school meals, SNAP and childcare assistance were threatened. We know that Colorado families are counting on their next governor to protect and expand these investments, and we’re proud to endorse Phil Weiser because he has demonstrated that he will be a champion for kids.” 

Weiser’s platform includes proposals to lower the cost of childcare as well as strengthen and expand access to early childhood care and education statewide. As Attorney General, he has challenged federal actions threatening funding for school meals, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Colorado Child Care Assistance Program. 

SCAN also announced its support for Amendment 87, which would direct new revenue to childcare, K-12 public education and health care. SCAN is a steering committee member of Protect Colorado’s Future, the coalition behind Amendment 87, and has contributed financially to the ballot measure campaign. 

Amendment 87 will fix a broken tax system where a childcare teacher pays the same as a millionaire. Under the proposal, 97% of Colorado taxpayers are expected to receive a tax cut, while higher-income households and corporations would pay more. The measure is designed to generate approximately $2.7 billion annually, with those funds restricted to childcare and health care. 

“Colorado families need investments that match the scale of the challenges they face,” Bustamante said. “Amendment 87 will create a dedicated source of funding for a severely underfunded childcare system, while Phil Weiser has shown that he will fight to ensure all kids have a strong start in life. SCAN is proud to support both.” 

SCAN’s support for Amendment 87 builds on years of organizing with Colorado families and advocates to make children’s well-being a priority in state policy. 

Recent SCAN victories in Colorado include: 

• Helping to secure passage of Propositions LL and MM in 2025, protecting and strengthening Colorado’s Healthy School Meals for All program so public school students can continue to receive free, nutritious breakfast and lunch.
• Supporting a $14 million increase for the Colorado Department of Early Childhood and a $10 million increase for the Universal Preschool Program, while helping to defeat legislation that would have made harmful changes to the latter. 
• Building a growing grassroots movement of Colorado parents, advocates and community members who are raising their voices for affordable childcare, early childhood education and healthy food for every child.
