At RNC, SCAN focus on child care, food security

July 23, 2024

Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) representatives were at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee to highlight the importance of investing in child care and food security.

On July 15, SCAN and Save the Children presented an Axios event on The Cost of Living Crisis for American Families at which SCAN founder Mark Shriver unveiled new polling which suggests financial security remains top of mind for millions of voters, leading to strong, bipartisan support for robust investments in child care and food security, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Voters also shared they want more government action on these issues and would feel more favorable toward candidates who supported action on these topics. SCAN had released the polling results earlier that day.

“These issues matter to people, to working families,” Shriver said at the Axios event. “They matter to Republicans and Democrats and independents. Yet the political leadership does not make this a priority. That’s the thing that’s most surprising to me.”

Shriver continued: “It’s not just urban settings – it’s rural America, very strong support in rural America, in urban settings, and in suburban areas, but we have not figured out how to get that message out and to find enough political leadership on the federal level that will push these issues.’”

The Axios event also featured Senator Daines (R-MT), Senator Britt (R-AL) and Representative Banks (R-IN), among others.

SCAN ran digital ads during the RNC for people in the convention area, touting Republican voter support for increased investments in child care and SNAP. We also hosted a mobile billboard which shared key data points from the poll.

SCAN and Save the Children will present a similar Axios event in August at the Democratic National convention in Chicago.
