Here are just a few ways that you made a difference for kids in 2020!
This year saw challenges big and small. The globe struggled through a relentless and devastating pandemic. Our nation had a reckoning about its history of racial injustice and brutality. And we all battled feelings of loneliness, helplessness and grief for our communities.
But 2020 wasn’t all bad. In fact, even though many people were struggling, Save the Children Action Network’s (SCAN) supporters showed up for kids. Now, I’d like to take a moment to celebrate these victories that inspired me.
Here are just a few big wins for kids that really moved me:
- Volunteers – including many students and other young people – asked presidential candidates how they planned to support the needs of children more than 200 times. As a result, all major Democratic presidential candidates, including President-elect Biden, committed to prioritizing early learning in their first 100 days of office. What an achievement!
- Our supporters sent emails, made calls, tweeted, and met (virtually) with members of Congress to demand that they address our growing child care crisis. As a result, the House of Representatives passed the Child Care is Essential Act.
- SCAN advocated on behalf of kids going hungry, and generated more than 60,000 messages to Congress. Congress listened, and acted to ensure that kids learning remotely could still receive school meals.
- Advocates generated more than 175,000 messages and comments in opposition to policies that harm migrant children seeking safety in our country.
- We saw huge wins for kids in many states! In New Mexico, SCAN advocated for a historic $300 million Early Childhood Trust Fund that provides sustainable funding for early childhood programs. And in Colorado, SCAN activists worked tirelessly to promote Proposition EE, which provides $2 billion in funding over the next decade to support universal preschool. Both efforts passed with overwhelming support!
We know there is still so much work to do for kids in 2021, and the struggles we face today are not over. But I know that with the help of SCAN’s network of advocates – like you!– we can help children achieve their dreams.
Thank you again to each and every one of our supporters for raising their voices for kids this year!
Help support SCAN’s efforts today!
