Seattle, Wash. (April 18, 2018)– Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) President Kris Perry issued the following statement on Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan’s levy plan announced today that supports the Seattle Preschool Program and early childhood education.
“We are grateful to Mayor Durkan for investing in children in her new Families, Education, Preschool and Promise plan, which allocates enough new funding for the Seattle Preschool Program to grow and begin to serve the unmet need for high-quality, affordable preschool in Seattle.
“Investing in early childhood education is a vital component for a child’s success in school and in life. Research shows that the Seattle Preschool Program is making critical progress toward closing the kindergarten readiness gap. Children of color, children from low-income families and children who are learning English as a second language are making the biggest gains in the program. We must continue this progress.
“We look forward to working with the Seattle City Council and urge them to pass a strong package that will support early childhood education without overburdening taxpayers.”
