Washington, D.C. (October 28, 2021) – After today’s release of the proposed framework and text for the Build Back Better Act, Christy Gleason, Save the Children Action Network Executive Director, issued the following statement:

“Today’s proposed investments of $400 billion in child care and universal pre-K, and $10 billion in child nutrition are unprecedented. These investments would have historic impact on America’s kids and families, allowing our nation – and our nation’s future – to recover and thrive like never before, especially after a historically devastating period. These investments would significantly improve access to affordable and high-quality child care that would allow caregivers to return to work while knowing their kids are in a safe and nurturing environment. And, this funding would ensure children have the food they need to grow up healthy and strong, and to show up at school ready to learn.

President Biden has long championed children and families – particularly early education and care – and this prioritization is notably reflected in this historic bill. Today marks the final sprint to getting this legislation over the finish line. Our base of grassroots advocates nationwide are continuing to do all they can to ensure our policymakers support this once-in-a-generation opportunity. We urgently call upon Congress to listen to their constituents, support the proposed funding levels and pass this bill into law. There is no time to lose. The success, livelihood and well-being of our nation – its families, children and economy – hangs in the balance.”

Save the Children Action Network will continue to work with policymakers to ensure this historic funding for early childhood education, child care and child nutrition is passed into law.
