WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 11, 2017) – Save the Children President and CEO Carolyn Miles and Save the Children Action Network President Mark Shriver issued the following joint statement today on former U.S. Ambassador Mark Green being nominated to serve as the new Administrator for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

“Having played an instrumental role in creating a number of development and health initiatives, both as a Member of Congress and later as a U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania, Ambassador Green is eminently qualified to serve as USAID Administrator and would arrive for work on his first day ready to lead the agency. Ambassador Green recognizes the importance of robust investments in foreign assistance and the need for transparency and accountability.

“Faced with growing demands in many parts of the world, including famine conditions in Nigeria, Somalia, Yemen, and South Sudan, more than 65 million people displaced around the world, and 16,000 children who continue to die each day from preventable and treatable causes, USAID needs strong leadership at the helm.

“As USAID Administrator, Ambassador Mark Green will lead an agency that has been transformed into a modern development institution over the past two administrations, making the agency more transparent, efficient, and impactful. There is no one better equipped to build on this recent bipartisan legacy of reform, to further champion development and humanitarian priorities in the policymaking process, and to increase the impact of our international assistance as we partner with developing countries on their path to self-reliance and stability.

“USAID is the driving force behind America’s leadership on maternal and child survival. We look forward to working with Ambassador Green in ensuring the U.S. fulfills its commitment to end preventable child and maternal deaths within a generation, among other notable goals.

“We urge the U.S. Senate to move quickly to confirm Ambassador Green’s nomination.”
