Washington, D.C. (September 14, 2016)Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) President Mark Shriver issued the following statement today on Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump’s proposed plan to address the rising cost of childcare.

“I am pleased that both Presidential campaigns have now outlined their plans to address the ever-growing cost of childcare. While Hillary Clinton’s plan is far more detailed and thoughtful than Mr. Trump’s, their proposals are an indication of the urgent need families face in affording high-quality childcare.

“Donald Trump’s proposal allows parents to write off the average cost of childcare in their state for their child’s age. While this sounds appealing, experts have pointed out that the tax deduction may not benefit lower-income parents because they often do not owe any taxes.

“Additionally, allowing parents who stay home to deduct costs would be a step backward, encouraging low-income families to stay out of the workforce instead of pursuing employment opportunities that could lift them out of poverty.

“This means the Trump plan does more to help wealthy families than those who need help the most.

“Secretary Clinton’s plan goes much further to make sure parents are able to afford high-quality childcare for their families. She proposes to cap the cost of childcare at no more than 10 percent of a family’s income. Clinton’s plan would also provide more access to on-campus childcare for parents who are attending college – benefitting an estimated 250,000 kids. And she proposes to offer high-quality pre-K education for all four-year-olds.

“Many parents know that without high-quality learning programs, their children could fall behind and never catch up. Families want to provide their children with this kind of quality care. However, for many it’s simply unaffordable.

“SCAN will continue to educate and engage with leaders from both parties on this vital issue at the state, local and federal level because we know every child deserves a strong start in life. We must ensure that all our elected officials understand the need to invest in kids and affordable high-quality childcare. It is crucial to the future success of our nation.”
