Washington, DC. (February 2, 2017) – Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) today placed a six-figure radio buy that applauds nine senators for their opposition to the recent executive order that reduces refugee admissions by more than half and indefinitely bans Syrian refugees from entering the United States.
The advertisements thank Senators John McCain, R-Ariz., Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., Dick Durbin, D-Ill., Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., Susan Collins, R-Maine, Angus King, I-Maine, Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., Jon Tester, D-Mont., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., for standing up against the refugee ban and for protecting children.
“We are grateful to these senators for showing political courage and standing up for vulnerable refugees around the world,” said Mark Shriver, President of SCAN. “These Syrian refugees, most of whom are women and children, are terrified; they are not terrorists. Our nation has an obligation to set an example for the world and not turn its back on those who need the promise of America most. Thankfully, these senators understand that this is attainable, all while maintaining our safety and security.”
The 60-second ads, which will run for ten days in six states, can be heard by clicking here.
Background:
Senators John McCain & Lindsey Graham (Arizona & South Carolina): “And we should not turn our backs on those refugees who have been shown through extensive vetting to pose no demonstrable threat to our nation, and who have suffered unspeakable horrors, most of them women and children.”
Senator Jeff Flake (Arizona): “Enhancing long term national security requires that we have a clear-eyed view of radical Islamic terrorism without ascribing radical Islamic terrorist views to all Muslims.”
Senator Dick Durbin (Illinois): “If you want to make America safe, the refugee program is the most carefully vetted program in our government.”
Senator Tammy Duckworth (Illinois): “The Statue of Liberty isn’t engraved w/ do not enter sign.”
Senator Susan Collins (Maine): “There should never, never be a religious test for refugee status…”
Senator Angus King (Maine): “The latest actions taken by this Administration, however, don’t protect us, but actually compromise our nation’s security.”
Senator Claire McCaskill (Missouri): “… I have serious questions to ask about the decree from President Trump that certain children from certain countries, based on certain religion, are no longer welcome in our country.”
Senator Jon Tester (Montana): “This Executive Order is having harmful consequences on children and brave allies who are helping us fight terrorism.”
