Statement from Janti Soeripto, President and CEO of Save the Children and Board Chair of Save the Children Action Network (SCAN)
Washington, D.C. (February 10, 2020) – In response to President Trump’s fiscal year 2021 budget proposal, Save the Children President and CEO, Janti Soeripto, issued the following statement:
“President Trump’s budget proposal falls significantly short of what is needed to ensure children at home and abroad can survive, thrive, and be protected. The proposal would drastically cut critical foreign assistance programs that support the urgent needs of vulnerable children around the world, including girls and those living in conflict zones or dying from preventable, treatable causes. Here at home, his budget would not provide nearly enough funding for crucial early learning and care programs, such as Head Start.
“This budget is deeply disheartening and unsettling. We must remember that we, as a nation, have the moral obligation to ensure the well-being and protection of children, our world’s youngest citizens. Many of the urgent issues facing children and families stem from misguided political decisions, such as the cuts proposed today.
“Congress has consistently rejected cuts to programs that support children, and we look forward to working with members on both sides of the aisle to ensure children and families are prioritized in fiscal year 2021.”
