In January, I attended a town hall meeting in Westminster with state Senators Dominick Moreno and Faith Winter asking that they support full-day kindergarten legislation for all of Colorado’s five-year-olds.
I am pleased to thank them for supporting HB19-1262, “State Funding for Full-day Kindergarten,” which passed the legislature last night (April 30). The bill is now on its way to Governor Polis for signature into law. This legislation provides $184 million dollars to make full-day kindergarten free for children in all of Colorado’s 178 school districts. This means nearly 14,000 children who currently cannot access full-day kindergarten, will soon have the chance to attend full-day kindergarten. The funding also makes more than 5,000 preschool spots available to children in our state- the single largest expansion of the Colorado Preschool Program since its creation.
